]]>Early December 2024, Seascope France partnered up with VirSec to launch its new online Lithium-ion Battery Safety Awareness on Superyachts course which spans preventive measures, fire prevention, and emergency response, providing a comprehensive understanding of the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries. Given the increasing incidence of marine fires linked to lithium-ion batteries, the course is seen as a crucial step in raising awareness and preparing the maritime and superyacht industry for associated risks and responsibilities.
Highlighting an important industry concern, Marine Industry News publication notes that insurance underwriters may reject claims related to fires involving lithium-ion batteries, especially when improper charging, handling, or storage is suspected. The course provides a response to this by aiming to reassure boat owners by ensuring that crew members are well-trained in preventing and responding to battery-related emergencies. This move aligns with a previous advisory from MIN in June 2022, urging boat owners to review their insurance policies and consult with brokers, particularly if considering retrofitting lithium-ion-powered engines.
]]>What happens once you book VHF Marine Radio course with Seascope France? You get a registration form to fill out, and with that we create an account for you to start studying. Once you complete the online part, you get a Certificate of Completion showing your overall score. There is a handbook to consult while taking online course, and a hardcopy of it can be picked up from our Seascope France office.
Upon completion of the online part, you need to set an in-person assessment. The first step is to pay the exam fee which is currently 70 GBP and is payable directly to the RYA. In return, the RYA will email to you a pre-filled exam report, and you can either forward it to training@seascopefrance.com or print and take to the assessment.
In January, our assessor will be available on the 22d – 27th of January, so don’t hesitate to contact us if you are willing to schedule and exam.
Please, bear in mind that once your exam is complete, your paperwork will be mailed to the RYA, and it takes the Association up to 21 days to process your application (not including mail time). The RYA offers a fast-track option for an additional fee if you are not willing to wait several weeks.
One more important thing to remember: your VHF license will be posted to the address you provide to the RYA. Seafarers are known to travel a lot, so make sure that you give an address where your license can be received.

]]>The Annex A of the Common Annexes of the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code provides guidelines and best practices for safety on battery-operated vessels and storage of small electric powered craft. With regards to the latter, the Annex makes a reference to the MGN 681 which emphasizes:
‘Whilst electric craft do not necessarily represent a greater fire risk than petrol craft, there are considerable differences in best practice for fire prevention, storage, fire detection and fire suppression of such craft, which should be considered when they are stored onboard. This guidance is provided for use where lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are used as the source of electrical power.’
Needless to say, the issue of Li-ion battery-powered equipment onboard superyachts has drawn the attention of the whole industry including Seascope France and PYA who partnered up to bring a webinar on the topic. Seascope France is now offering a Lithium-ion Battery Safety Awareness course to help crew recognize potential dangers and act accordingly.
When it comes to safety onboard, proper crew training plays a crucial role, and this has been recognized by the REG Yacht Code as well:
‘Crew Training - it is recommended that at no time shall there be less than two persons on the vessel who are adequately trained and experienced in all battery equipment and procedures. In addition, all crew shall have an awareness of the vessel’s emergency procedures regarding the battery.’
]]>Mid-November 2023, when running its Advanced Fire Fighting course, Seascope France had the pleasure of greeting MCA at its fireground in Contes. The training course was successfully re-approved by the Agency, and the next session is now scheduled on the 29th of January – 1st of February, 2024.
With Seascope France, it takes only 4 days to complete the course. As our fireground is located only 25 minutes away from Antibes, we do not require extra time for travel. Thanx to the proximity, we are also able to offer the most competitive price for the Advanced Fire Fighting training.
What our students say about the course:
Who is this course for?
If you work in the deck or engineering department and consider moving up the career ladder, then this course is for you. Along with the Yachtmaster Offshore ticket, STCW Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting is required to obtain or revalidate CoC for OOW, Chief Mate, and Master ranks. For yacht engineers, AFF certification is required to grow towards 2nd Engineer and higher.
STCW Advanced Fire Fighting training is also highly recommended to all crew involved into fire control and fire fighting operations onboard.
There are only 4 places left for our end of January training. Contact us for more information or drop an email to training@seascopefrance.com for booking.

Throughout this season, Seascope France has experienced a remarkable surge in demand for its Powerboat Level 2 course. We attribute it not only to the yachting industry that more often now prefers candidates with tender and jet ski qualifications, but also to the increasing popularity of boating as a recreational activity.
What is the Powerboat Level 2 course about?
The Powerboat Level 2 course is an enjoyable two-day training aimed to give basic skills in pre-launch checks, boat launching and handling including turning, manoeuvring, steering, anchoring, mooring, saving men overboard etc. The theoretical knowledge gained through the course touches upon the subjects of winds, tides, buoyage, reading charts, positioning etc. One of the important aspects covered during the course is collision regulations. Upon completion of the course, students are awarded with an RYA license recognized in many countries of the world.
This week’s Thursday we will run the last Powerboat Level 2 course until next year. There’s only one spot left, so you may still grab the chance and start powerboating this year!
]]>Having joined forces with Gerard Pollock, Master Mariner and maritime author, Seascope France created a Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Awareness on Superyachts – a course specifically designed for yacht crew, captains, officers and anyone who is in charge of the safe operations of lithium-ion powered equipment onboard.

Participation is free. Click here to register for the webinar.
]]>One of the sponsors of the Sea Changes Forum 2023, Seascope France team headed to Monaco this September to meet with the speakers from a diverse array of organizations within the yachting sector. Those included Mr Ajit Jacob, Chief Examiner, Maritime and Coast Guard Agency, Mr Richard Falk, Director of Training and Qualifications, Royal Yachting Association, Miss Angela Wallace, PYA Director of Interior Training, PYA Welfare Group and others.
The conference covered a multitude of subjects including STCW requirements and flexibility within the regulations, digitisation - improving end-to-end customer journey, career progression in yachting, the use of alternative fuels and lithium-ion batteries on yachts, soft skills training and continuous professional development etc. The issues of crew welfare, crew management, and retention were also raised and addressed. With enough time left for the questions from guests, the forum served as a vital platform for the industry players to exchange views and opinions.
Seascope France extends its gratitude to the PYA for the opportunity to sponsor this year’s event and looks forward to future cooperation.
]]>The four lucky Deckhand students spent a day onboard our training vessel and got insights into their future duties. They learned about ropes, whipping, maintenance and cleaning of teak, chrome, glass surfaces, washdowns, gel coating and other things. They also got a chance to chat with a team of experienced deckhands who are currently busy onboard a large charter boat and learned more about the industry. All in all, the course was a great success, and the reviews confirm it.
“Viewing a superyacht was fantastic! it was lovely to have a coffee break together and have a chance to ask questions. As a short one-day course, it was exceptional.” (Charles S.)
“The course was very interesting and I got a lot of useful information about basic, general duties of the Deckhand. The instructor, Hugh, was explaining thoroughly and replied to our questions with great readiness. I think this course is a nice thing for guys, who want to start in this industry.” (Dmitriy G.)
Seascope France would like to thank Green Clean Marine for providing their boat cleaning products. Special thanks to Antibes Ship Services for their support in course organisation.
]]>If you ever wondered what yachts usually do in winter, you might as well click here to read about dual season in yachting. Not all boats leave though; some of them will head to shipyards and stay in the Med till next year. One way or another, September opens opportunities for new crew get trained and look for a job and for the experienced yachties to extend their qualifications and get a better position onboard.
For us in Seascope France, September will bring lots of training and excitement. Here's what's available with us this coming month:
STCW Basic Safety training and STCW Refresher: the first week of September filled up quickly, and we added 11-12 September for the Updated Proficiency course. BST course can be still booked for the week of 18th to 22d September. Check out as well our pack offers if you want to add Powerboat Level 2 and/or Jet ski to your training. There will be only two PWC/Jet Ski courses in September, so places are quite limited.
For the experienced seamen with 2.5K nautical miles on their account we will run a Yachtmaster Offshore (Motor) program. The full course (theory + practical) starts on the 11th of September and will run for two full weeks with the exam on September, 22-23.
]]>On day 2, the students learned how to make basic knots and splices and made their own rope key chain. Armed with new skills, on day 3 and 4 the students were out at sea learning to handle a 6.5-meter Capelli tender. Friday started with an introduction to the safety of riding a jet ski and continued all the way down to the Lerins Islands off Cannes where shallow turquoise waters offer a splendid opportunity for snorkeling and other fun water activities.
By the end of the week, the happy students walked away with an STCW certificate, two RYA licenses and Seascope France certificate of Knots and Splices course completion. And of course, the students took away new knowledge and skills that will remain with them indefinitely.

Having all what is required, Seascope France and Seascope Maritime Training, located in Antibes and Liverpool respectively, have recently launched Advanced Fire Fighting course. It is a step-up training that builds upon knowledge received through Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course which forms a module of STCW 95 Basic Safety Training. In comparison to basic training, the Advanced Fire Fighting is highly practical and intense: students are involved in the operations of search, rescue, and organisation of fire teams, investigation of fire cause and reporting etc. The course is a part of mandatory training for Chief Mates and crew members in charge of firefighting operations on yachts.
Both Seascope schools have their fireground facilities within easy reach of their schools. Seascope France offers free lift for their students from the centre of Antibes to Contes, a town next to Nice, where the school’s containers imitating large boats are placed. The local state-of-the-art fire station is right next to it to ensure safety and provide with equipment.
The Advanced Fire Fighting training is delivered in accordance with the STCW 1978 Code as amended and meets the requirements laid out in the Section VI/3. Candidates for this course must be in possession of valid Proficiency in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificates (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.2)) and be physically fit. The training lasts four days, and the certification is issued on the last day right upon completion.

]]>In the last couple of months, Seascope France has expanded its selection of online trainings. Today they include:
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
This training is now getting more and more required by cruise ships and superyachts. It is a specifically designed course for those crew members who report to the Ship Security Officer and carry out designated security duties and responsibilities.
Crowd Management and Passenger Safety
Crowd Management training is required for all personnel designated to assist passengers in an emergency. Traditionally, this course has been delivered offline. Therefore, we strongly recommend to check with your potential employer if online training will be accepted.
This is an essential course for all those who want to start and advance in navigation. Future deckhands are strongly recommended to take it, and it is a pre-requisite for Yachtmaster programs.
RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities
This course introduces students to the UK MCA code of practice for small commercial yachts (less than 24 metres), manning requirements, and safety regulations. It is a must-do course if you want to commercialize Yachtmaster ticket.
RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship
This course is suitable for anyone interested in sailing, motor boating, and works well in complementing our on-the-water training, such as Powerboat Level 2 and Jet Ski/PWC courses.
All these courses are available year-round, and you can get them on our website in just a couple of clicks! Nevertheless, maritime and especially yachting industry require some onsite practice and hands-on experience. Therefore, such vital trainings as STCW Basic Safety and Yachtmaster will require your physical presence.
]]>The idea behind the campaign was to create a Holiday Gift Guide for Yachting Enthusiasts. The Guide features a variety of gifts and Christmas promotions offered by the industry participants. A part of the proceedings collected through the campaign was donated to SNSM D'Antibes (The Antibes Lifeboat), a volunteer organisation that sets as its mission to save lives in danger at sea.
If you are still in search of a gift, check out our Xmas gift ideas. Until 15 January, 2023 we are also running a promotion on a number of our trainings. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
