The Riviera by Sea: Powerboats, Jet Skis & Coastal Adventures

The French Riviera is famous for its crystal-clear waters, picturesque coastal towns and exceptional weather. Whether you are visiting Antibes, Cannes, or Nice, the Mediterranean offers countless opportunities for adventure, relaxation and unforgettable experiences on the water.

From exploring hidden coves and the famous Cannes Islands (Les îles de Lérins) to learning how to drive a boat or jet ski, there are maritime activities for every level of experience. At Seascope France, we’ve collected the most popular questions to help you make the best of your seaside vacation.

Do I need a license to drive a boat in France?

In France, a licence is generally required to operate a motorboat with an engine exceeding 4.5 kWt. If you are looking to gain practical boating skills and enjoy the freedom of navigating on your own, the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is one of the most recognised qualifications worldwide.

The course lasts two days and covers boat handling, safety procedures, docking manoeuvres and navigation basics, making it ideal for beginners and future boat owners alike.

Can beginners learn to drive a boat?

Absolutely. No previous experience is required to join the Powerboat Handling course. Whether you are completely new to boating or simply looking to improve your confidence on the water, the course is designed to provide practical skills in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Can tourists get a boat license in France?

Yes. Every year, tourists, expats and international residents choose Seascope France to obtain recognized boating qualifications while enjoying their stay on the French Riviera. All training is delivered in English by experienced RYA instructors.

What are the best places to go boating near Antibes?

The French Riviera offers some of the most beautiful boating destinations in Europe. Popular locations include:

  •        The Cannes Islands (Îles de Lérins)
  •        Billionaires’ Bay (Baie des Milliardaires)
  •        Cap d’Antibes
  •        Golfe-Juan
  •        Cannes Bay
  •        Villefranche-sur-Mer
  •        Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
  •        Saint-Tropez

These destinations are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing and discovering the Mediterranean coastline from a unique perspective.

Can I rent a boat with an RYA Powerboat Level 2 license?

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification is recognized by many charter companies throughout the South of France.

Some charter operators known to accept the qualification include:

Antibes

  •        Cranchi CNG Agence du Port
  •        Vanguard Yachts
  •        Mer Yachting Services

I don’t have a license. Can I still enjoy a day on the water?

Of course! Seascope France offers private boat charters with a professional skipper, allowing you to discover the French Riviera without holding any boating licence.

Whether you would like to explore the Cannes Islands, Cap d’Antibes, or Billionaires’ Bay, our skipper will take care of the navigation while you relax and enjoy the experience.

Do I need a license to ride a jet ski?

If you’re looking for an exciting way to discover the French Riviera, jet skiing is one of the most popular activities on the Mediterranean coast. From Antibes to Cannes and Cap d’Antibes, it offers a unique perspective of the region’s spectacular scenery.

To legally operate a jet ski in France, you must hold a valid licence. While the French coastal boating licence (Permis Côtier) is accepted, it is only available in French and is therefore not practical for most international visitors and tourists.

The RYA Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) qualification offers an internationally recognised alternative delivered entirely in English. The course teaches the essential skills, safety procedures and regulations required to operate a jet ski confidently and responsibly.

Can a boat license help me start a career in yachting?

Yes. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is an entry-level qualification in the superyacht industry and is commonly required for operating yacht tenders. Many aspiring yacht crew members begin their yachting journey by obtaining this qualification before progressing to more advanced courses.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the STCW Basic Safety Training remains the essential qualification required to work professionally on board commercial yachts. Qualifications such as the RYA Powerboat Level 2, RYA Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski), Deckhand / Interior and other specialized yachting courses are valuable additions to your CV and can significantly improve your employability, but they do not replace the STCW.

For anyone considering a career in yachting, the recommended pathway is often to obtain the STCW certificates first, followed by additional qualifications tailored to your career goals and the position you are aiming for within the industry. All the courses can be combined into training packages to get the best value for money.

At Seascope France, we’re proud to help both visitors and future yacht crew gain the skills and qualifications they need to achieve their goals on the water.

If you’re unsure which course is right for you, our team will be happy to help you choose the best option based on your experience, interests and ambitions. Don't hesitate to contact us
