About the course

STCW Basic Safety Training is a 5-day long course comprised of five modules:

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.4): understanding of on-board working conditions, safety procedures and accident prevention.
  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.1): survival at sea in the event of an emergency, life-raft familiarisation.
  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.3): basic first aid training & resuscitation.
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.2): fire causes, prevention, extinguishing techniques.
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6. Sect. A-VI/6 (para 4):  importance of on-board security and how to recognise and react in the event of security threats.

The course provides students with an important introduction to working at sea and will equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to work safely on-board a seagoing vessel. Although it is a legal requirement for working on board commercial vessels over 24-metres, it is strongly recommended to be taken by all seafarers. Once students obtain STCW Basic Safety Training they are equipped with the minimum mandatory requirement for working on superyachts and commercial vessels over 24 metres in length.

It is important to remember that in accordance with the 2010 Manila Amendments the holders of STCW Basic Safety certificates are obliged to update their proficiency in fire prevention and fire fighting and personal survival techniques every 5 years. This training is known as STCW Refresher course. You can learn more about STCW Basic Safety and Refresher course here: STCW Basic Safety or Refresher Course: Check Your Certificates

The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping) courses are run in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code including the Manila amendments introduced in 2010.

Ged Rocks! (and so does Seascope France)

I can easily say this was one of my favourite courses. It was incredibly well-structured and put together with great care and knowledge. The information was offered in a way that was very easy to retain and understand. I feel well-prepared and educated in case of any emergencies, having completed the course. Ged was a key part of this. He always made sure that everyone not only understood the material but also felt confident in their ability and knowledge afterwards. He made the course enjoyable as well. I feel very lucky to have had Ged as an instructor. The course material was well-rounded and in-depth enough to put me at ease with any and all possible dangers I might face in my future in the maritime industry. Thank you again to everyone at Seascope for their help (Anastasia) and especially Ged!

Very worthwhile

I learnt a lot on the course and now feel much more prepared to deal with the potential dangers of working at sea. Ged was an amazing instructor, very engaging and extremely knowledgeable, as evidenced by all the anecdotal stories he shared. Highly recommend :)

This course has been worth of my time

Going into a 5-day training, I thought I would be bored and not absorb much information. I can honestly say there has not been one minute this whole week where I have not been fascinated and engaged by the course. Ged is the best teacher I've had. I wish he taught my university degree! No negativity. Even if I don't get a yacht job or any ship-related work, this course has been worth my time.

Interesting course

Information delivered in an interesting way. I learned a lot and really enjoyed the course. Ged, the instructor, was very helpful, funny, and respectful of everyone's ability. Thank you Seascope France !

Great course!

Extremely well structured course. Ged is a highly trained instructor who explained all parts of the course in a complete but accessible way, focusing on the importance of safety at sea, and always keeping the lessons dynamic and interactive. I highly recommend Seascope for the professionalism and kindness of the whole team!
Thanks again for everything :)
