Yacht Engineer Pack combines STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW 95 / STCW 2010), Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC1), and Approved Engine Course 2 (AEC2) into one complete yacht engineer training package designed to start a career in the superyacht industry. The package includes both mandatory maritime safety (STCW) and small vessel engineering qualifications required to enter the yachting industry and work onboard as an engineer or assistant engineer. The three courses serve as a foundation to enter a Small Vessel Engineer Program - the current UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) certification pathway for engineers working on superyachts, workboats, tugs, fishing and research vessels.

About the Pack

STCW Basic Safety Training is an essential requirement for entering the yachting industry and working on superyachts or onboard commercial vessels. The course includes 5 modules delivered over 5 days, with students receiving an MCA-approved STCW certificate upon successful completion.

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.4)

  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.1)

  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.3)

  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.2)

  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6. Sect. A-VI/6 (para 4)

Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC 1) provides essential theoretical and practical knowledge of marine diesel engines and yacht engineering systems. AEC 1 is a key entry-level yacht engineering qualification and tailored to meet the MCA Codes of Practice for large commercial sailing and motor vessels, super yachts, small commercial motor vessels, and workboats. Successful completion of AEC1 is required before progressing to AEC2.

Approved Engine Course 2 (AEC 2) enhances the skills learned in AEC1, allowing crew to further develop both their technical and practical engineering knowledge. The 5-day course includes learnings of refrigeration, legislation & management, maintenance systems, safe systems of work, electrical systems, hydraulics & basic engineering tasks and fresh water & sewage systems.

Attendance, Assessments & Certification

All courses within this training package, including STCW Basic Safety Training, Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC 1), and Approved Engine Course 2 (AEC 2), are delivered and assessed in accordance with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approval requirements. 100% attendance is mandatory in order to complete the course and receive the training certificate.

Assessments:

STCW Basic Safety Training is assessed continuously through short multiple-choice tests after each module, along with practical exercises. AEC 1 and AEC 2 each include final written assessments designed to confirm theoretical knowledge and practical understanding based on the yacht engineering syllabus.

Certifications:

Successful completion of the courses, including all assessments and attendance requirements, will result in the issue of MCA-approved certificates recognized across the yachting industry.

Small Vessel Engineer (SV) Programme

The Small Vessel Engineer (SV) Programme is the MCA's engineering certification pathway for engineers working on small commercial vessels, including superyachts, workboats and other vessels up to 3,000 GT. If you are an experienced seafarer with 24 months of onboard engineering service on vessels of at least 200 kW, including a minimum of six months of seagoing service, you can register on the programme provided you hold STCW Basic Safety Training, AEC 1, AEC 2 and a valid ENG1 medical certificate. If you do not yet have the required service and sea time, you can complete the required training first and then gain the qualifying onboard experience before applying to join the programme.

FAQs

Do I need experience as an engineer for this pack?

No, there is no previous engineering experience required to do this package. AEC 1 is an entry-level engineering course, while AEC 2 builds on the foundations of AEC 1 to develop more advanced technical knowledge and practical training. To progress to AEC2, you must successfully complete AEC1.

Do AEC 1 and AEC 2 benefit deckhands?

Yes. AEC 1 and AEC 2 are valuable qualifications for deckhands working onboard motor yachts and small commercial vessels. On smaller vessels operating under Minimum Safe Manning requirements, having additional engineering knowledge can make deckhands more versatile and valuable onboard.

What if I miss a day of the training?

100% attendance is mandatory for the successful completion of the course. If you miss a day on STCW training, you will be required to complete the missed module later. Missing a day of training on AEC1 and AEC2 may result in failing to obtain the course certificate.
