How to Become a Yacht Stewardess: Your Complete Guide to Starting a Career at Sea
With our latest Guest Program now complete, we're already preparing for our next session, running 7–11 September. Every course welcomes students from different backgrounds but with the same goal: starting a career in the superyacht industry.
One of the questions we're asked most often is "How do I become a yacht stewardess?" While the role may look glamorous from the outside, working onboard requires professionalism, attention to detail and the right training.
In this guide, we'll explain the qualifications you'll need, what you'll learn during stewardess training, and how to maximise your chances of landing your first job onboard.
What qualifications do you need to become a yacht stewardess?
The first step is completing the STCW Basic Safety Training and obtaining a valid ENG1 Medical Certificate. These qualifications are required to work onboard commercial yachts and are expected by almost every employer.
While these certificates are essential, they don't teach the day-to-day responsibilities of working in the interior department. That's why many aspiring stewardesses choose to complete dedicated interior training before applying for their first position.
At Seascope France, students can either book the IAMI/GUEST Yacht Steward/ess Training alongside their STCW course or choose one of our training packs. The Basic Interior Pack combines both qualifications in one programme, while the Full Yacht Interior Stew Pack also includes RYA Powerboat Level 2 and Food Safety Level 2, giving you an even stronger CV before entering the industry.
Having professional interior training on your CV demonstrates motivation and shows recruiters that you're serious about building a career in yachting.
Why take a superyacht stewardess course?
Luxury yachts operate to exceptionally high standards, and interior crew are expected to deliver outstanding service from their very first day onboard.
A professional stewardess course prepares you for those expectations before you step onto a yacht. Rather than learning everything through trial and error, you'll already understand industry terminology, housekeeping procedures, service etiquette and the level of attention to detail expected onboard.
It also allows you to begin your job search with greater confidence and a much stronger understanding of the role.
What will you learn during stewardess training?
At Seascope France, the IAMI/GUEST Yacht Steward/ess Training is designed to prepare students for the realities of working in a superyacht's interior department. Accredited by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI), it's one of the leading entry-level hospitality programmes for aspiring yacht stewardesses.

The course is divided into four specialist modules:
Yachting Life
Learn how the superyacht industry operates, understand crew hierarchy and onboard etiquette, discover what employers expect from junior stewardesses, and prepare for your first role in yachting.
Housekeeping
Develop the practical skills required to maintain luxury yacht interiors, including cabin preparation, cleaning techniques, fabric care, laundry procedures, wardrobe management and the meticulous attention to detail expected onboard.
Food & Beverage
Master the fundamentals of luxury hospitality, from table setting and silver service to guest interaction, food presentation and professional service standards.
Wine & Mixology
Gain confidence serving wines, preparing cocktails and understanding the basics of beverage service expected on modern superyachts.
Throughout the programme, students take part in practical exercises designed to replicate real onboard situations, helping them build confidence before joining their first yacht.
If you're only looking to develop a specific skill, each module can also be booked individually. This flexible approach allows you to tailor your training or continue building your qualifications as your yachting career progresses.

Getting your first stewardess job
Landing your first position is often the biggest challenge for anyone entering the yachting industry. Every season, recruiters receive hundreds of applications from candidates with similar qualifications, making it essential to stand out.
Completing a stewardess course before applying gives you a real advantage. You'll already understand onboard standards, demonstrate practical hospitality skills and require less training once hired. Recruiters know you'll adapt more quickly to life onboard.
Many aspiring crew members also choose to complete their yacht crew training in Antibes, at the heart of the French Riviera, before beginning their dockwalking and job search in one of the world's busiest yachting hubs.
Continue building your career
Your first qualification is only the beginning. As you gain experience onboard, continuing your training is one of the best ways to progress within the interior department.
Many stewardesses choose to expand their knowledge with advanced hospitality courses such as Food Safety Level 2 or Barista Skills, allowing them to deliver an even higher level of guest service and prepare for more senior positions.
Investing in continuous training helps you stay competitive and opens the door to greater responsibilities throughout your yachting career.
