When the Sun Goes Down, the Real Tender Driving Begins
RYA Tender Operator Course - Antibes
Daytime tender driving is where most crew begin. Conditions are clearer, distances easier to judge, and visual references obvious. It’s a controlled environment where confidence builds quickly.
Night operations are different. Navigation marks fade into background lighting, shore lights distort depth perception, and previously simple manoeuvres demand far greater awareness. Add guests on board and unfamiliar anchorages, and the pressure increases significantly. Safe tender operations after dark require more than basic handling skills — they require structured training and confident decision-making.
This is precisely where the RYA Tender Operator Course fits in. Designed specifically for professional yacht crew, it addresses the realities of tender operations that standard entry-level courses were never intended to cover.
Beyond Powerboat Level 2
The Powerboat Level 2 qualification remains a useful foundation, but it was developed for recreational use. While it introduces boat handling and basic navigation, it does not reflect the operational demands placed on tender drivers working on superyachts, particularly during night transfers or high-pressure guest movements.
The Tender Operator course was developed to bridge this gap. Created with input from the Professional Yachting Association, it focuses on professional standards rather than recreational competency. The emphasis is not simply on driving a boat, but on operating as part of a yacht’s safety and service framework.
Training for Real Operations
Tender work is one of the most visible roles on board. Guests form opinions within minutes, and captains quickly identify who they trust at the helm — especially when conditions are less than ideal. The course develops practical skills in day and night pilotage, passenger management, communication with the mothership, and emergency response, all within a realistic operational context.
Night driving is not “PB2 in the dark.” It is a separate skill set entirely, requiring the ability to interpret navigation lights, manage limited visual references, and make sound decisions under pressure. These are learned skills, not instincts.
A Growing Industry Standard
The RYA Tender Operator Certificate reflects a shift in how tender operations are viewed on board. As yacht operations become more complex, captains are increasingly looking for evidence of structured training rather than relying solely on informal experience. This is particularly relevant for night operations, where mistakes have limited margins and consequences escalate quickly.
Developed with input from the Professional Yachting Association, the course focuses on operational reality rather than recreational boating standards. It addresses the gap between basic boat handling and the level of competence expected when moving guests, operating close to large yachts, and working under reduced visibility.
The course runs over two days and includes night driving as a core element, not an add-on. Training is delivered from Antibes, with classroom facilities and tenders operating out of Golfe-Juan, placing students in a working yachting environment rather than a controlled inland setting.
