STCW Basic Safety Training referred to as STCW 95/10 A -VI/1 is a mandatory training for all people heading out to work at sea onboard commercial vessels including superyachts, cruise liners, expedition vessels, ferries etc. It is a minimum requirement to enter yachting industry.

About the course 

STCW Basic Safety Training is a 5-day long course comprised of five modules:

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.4): understanding of on-board working conditions, safety procedures and accident prevention.
  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.1): survival at sea in the event of an emergency, life-raft familiarisation.
  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.3): basic first aid training & resuscitation.
  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (STCW Reg. VI/1. Sect. A-VI/1 (para 2.1.2): fire causes, prevention, extinguishing techniques.
  • Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW Reg. VI/6. Sect. A-VI/6 (para 4):  importance of on-board security and how to recognise and react in the event of security threats.

The course provides students with an important introduction to working at sea and will equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to work safely on-board a seagoing vessel. Although it is a legal requirement for working on board commercial vessels over 24-metres, it is strongly recommended to be taken by all seafarers. Once students obtain STCW Basic Safety Training they are equipped with the minimum mandatory requirement for working on superyachts and commercial vessels over 24 metres in length.

It is important to remember that in accordance with the 2010 Manila Amendments the holders of STCW Basic Safety certificates are obliged to update their proficiency in fire prevention and fire fighting and personal survival techniques every 5 years. The STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping) courses are run in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code including the Manila amendments introduced in 2010.

Just came back after 10 days spent in Antibes doing my STCW and a Deckhand course with Sea Scope and I couldn't be happier, I'm very new to the Yachting industry and I really had no clue on what to do but Sophie and Anastasia were simply amazing, from the very beginning they helped me relax and they were so patient with my many questions or doubts, they went above and beyond to what their duty it's supposed to be, easing up the process for me to get there and they made sure I had the best experience possible while there, you can clearly see that they really love what they do and that they really care about their students.

Special mention to Ged the teacher of the STCW course, he's the best teacher I've ever seen in my life and an extraordinarious human being, his way to teach it's not really like studying but it's more like a journey into the knowledge that you need and the way how he's sharing it with you makes it so interesting that you can't wait to get to know more and more and the journey continues with the many stories he will tell you of his personal experiences of his incredible life while at the same time giving you the opportunity to share stories of your own life, during the days you spend with him he will make you feel always more aware of the seriousness of what he's teaching you allowing you at the same time to grow confidence in what you will need to face till the day of the fire practice where he did his best to be there for everyone, in the end this 5 days are a journey into yourself and thanks to Ged I feel that I didn't just learned knowledge but that I've become a better person, Ged he's simply amazing and the way he teaches you cannot be taught, he's just naturally this way!

I will forever reccomend them and will definitely go back to do more courses with them if I will be able to.

Ged Rocks! (and so does Seascope France)

I can easily say this was one of my favourite courses. It was incredibly well-structured and put together with great care and knowledge. The information was offered in a way that was very easy to retain and understand. I feel well-prepared and educated in case of any emergencies, having completed the course. Ged was a key part of this. He always made sure that everyone not only understood the material but also felt confident in their ability and knowledge afterwards. He made the course enjoyable as well. I feel very lucky to have had Ged as an instructor. The course material was well-rounded and in-depth enough to put me at ease with any and all possible dangers I might face in my future in the maritime industry.
